Our networking hardware media converters, as part of 3M™ Volition™ Network Solutions, were developed to support you in the changeover from copper-based cabling to a fibre optic based system with 10 Mbps Ethernet and 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet protocols. Our media converters permit the simple, cost-effective re-use of existing network components (fitted with RJ45 connections for copper wire) in fibre optic cabling systems. The media converter converts a "twisted pair" signal into a matching fibre optic signal. Because of their attractive price, the converters can also make a contribution to narrowing the price gap between fibre optic and copper-based network products. Media converters are available as both self-contained individual units for installation at the workstation and as 19" rack units with 6, 12, or 24 ports.

3M™ Volition™ VOL-5000 Switch

Modular switch for Ethernet/Fast Ethernet/Gigabit Ethernet with integral management software.

The Volition™ VOL-5000 switch provides the high-speed connections required by modern businesses to meet the need for continuously increasing network speeds. The VOL-5000 Switch provides a fast, simple, functional method of installing or expanding a network backbone with Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet technology by combining low cost with high versatility. A high port density means that a single VOL-5000 Switch with eight plug-in modules provides up to 64 Fast Ethernet or 8 Gigabit Ethernet connections.

If the user requires more ports, two VOL-5000 switches can be cascaded by using the VOL-4100-S module. The modular capabilities of the VOL-5000 permit many different configurations with Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet connections.

In addition to its modularity, the VOL-5000 provides other important functions such as port trunking, IEEE 802.1q VLAN, IEEE 802.1d Spanning Tree Algorithms, IEEE 802.3x Flow Control and Backpressure and IEEE 802.1p class of service. A redundant power supply option is also available. The VOL-5000 switch can be fully configured by SNMP or the Web, using the integral Java-based management system.

3M™ Volition™ Fibre Optic Network Interface Cards

3M™ PCI network interface cards have a VF-45™ fibre optic connection and support all 100 Mbps and 1Gbps Ethernet protocols. These cards support the current operating systems and provide high efficiency and reliability for use on today’s networks. The 100 Mbps card can be operated in full- or half-duplex mode. The N100VF+TX card is fitted with a VF-45™ and an RJ45 port and can be used on either a fibre optic network or a copper network without changing the driver.
