A network media converter enables a signal to be moved from a copper network to fibre and vice versa. Converters can be designed to work with any network type, including Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, ATM, FDDI, and Token Ring. Typically, this conversion is from either 10/100Mbps or 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet twisted-pair signals to 100Base-FX Fast Ethernet single-mode fiber signals, from a 1000Base-T UTP port to one 1000Base-SX (SC, multi-mode fiber) port, from ethernet copper to fiber such as converting from Cat5e to fibre or from 1000Base-T to 1000Base-SX.
Media converters increase networking flexibility, while decreasing networking costs. These devices offer media connections that readily fit almost any environment and connect all segments of the network, regardless of the media mix: coax, twisted-pair, single-mode, or multi-mode fibre. The advantage to Fiber media converters is that they can reliably and inexpensively extend the distance between two 10Base2 devices or two 10BaseT devices by up to 2,000 meters. This functionality is possible without the added expense of a repeater. Essentially, a single method for extending the distance between a full duplex switch and a fileserver is also possible for 2,000 meters is using media converters in a 100BaseTX to 100BaseFX back-to-back configuration
Transceivers (transmitter-receiver), transmits and receives analog or digital signals and is the component in LANs that puts ignals onto the network wire but also can detects a signal passing along a wire. The transceiver in a LAN is usually built into the network card although some LANs require an external transceiver. Medium Access Unit (MAU) is a transceiver for an Ethernet network.
In fact, media converters can function in either half-duplex or full-duplex mode. Full-duplex Ethernet over UTP runs at 20 or 200Mbit/sec, for example, while half-duplex Ethernet over UTP runs at either 10 or l00Mbit/sec. Full duplex Ethernet is especially valuable in linking two switches or connecting a switch to a file server. No adjustments are necessary when using either mode, as a media converter will automatically sense which mode is in operation.
